“I felt helpless. The thought of recreation opportunities that excluded people with disabilities haunted me. I couldn’t stand by and do nothing. I had to act. I needed to change this. I will make a difference.” The idea for Mobility Mountain began with a simple encounter at a state park campground. Our founder met a young girl who was blind and asked what she enjoyed doing there. Her answer was simple: “I am blind, so there is nothing for me to do here.” Those words stayed with him. They exposed a problem that goes far beyond whether a trail, building, or campsite technically meets accessibility standards. Too often, people with disabilities are offered access to a place without being given meaningful access to the experience of nature itself. Mobility Mountain was created to help change that. Our vision is a publicly accessible nature retreat where conservation, accessibility, recreation, and environmental education work together. A place where people with disabilities, veterans, families, local residents, and visitors can experience the outdoors together—not through a separate or segregated program, but as part of the same community. We envision accessible trails, tactile and sensory interpretation, adaptive outdoor equipment, inclusive gathering spaces, environmental education, and opportunities for people of all abilities to explore and learn from the natural world. These features will be thoughtfully integrated into the landscape while protecting the forests, wildlife habitat, water resources, and open spaces that make the experience possible. Mobility Mountain is also about setting a higher standard. ADA compliance is essential, but accessibility should not end with compliance. We want to demonstrate what can happen when inclusion is considered from the beginning—when people with disabilities are part of the conversation, public access is built into the mission, and conservation and recreation are planned together. Our goal extends beyond one property. By creating a place that shows what thoughtful, accessible outdoor recreation can look like, Mobility Mountain hopes to encourage others to rethink how public lands, parks, trails, and outdoor destinations welcome people of all abilities. Mobility Mountain is still being built, but the mission is already clear: A Legacy of Accessibility Through Nature.
