Heath's Story
Heath McClung
Director | Programs & Accessibility
Heath McClung brings an uncommon combination of engineering expertise, military leadership, lived experience with disability, and a passion for outdoor adventure to Mobility Mountain.
A U.S. Army infantry veteran, Heath served with the 10th Mountain Division and deployed to Afghanistan in 2011. He sustained severe combat injuries during that deployment that ultimately resulted in an above-knee amputation. His experience with rehabilitation, prosthetics, and adapting to life with a mobility disability became a catalyst for his interest in engineering and improving opportunities for others.
Heath earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering through the University of Missouri and was selected as a Pat Tillman Foundation Scholar in 2017. Professionally, he has gone on to lead engineering teams in the electric motor manufacturing industry, combining technical problem-solving with organizational leadership.
The outdoors remains an important part of Heath’s life. He and his family hike, camp, travel, and use a customized vehicle to reach remote destinations, giving him firsthand knowledge of both the possibilities and barriers that exist for people with mobility disabilities who want to experience the outdoors.
At Mobility Mountain, Heath brings the perspective of both an engineer and an adaptive adventurer to program development and accessibility planning, helping ensure that accessibility is practical, thoughtful, and built into the experience from the beginning.
